Injuries and Fatalities from Traffic Collisions in California

Many of us spend hours each week in vehicles, either as drivers or as passengers. Driving becomes so customary that it is easy to forget about the possible dangers we can face while on the road. Hundreds of thousands of people are injured in traffic accidents each year in the state of California, with many victims even losing their lives in collisions.

These traffic collisions include car accidents and accidents involving other types of motor vehicles. Here is a look at some of the most recent injury and fatality statistics offered by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). This data, which is for the year 2011, comes from the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS).

The data shows that in the year 2011, 2,835 people were killed and 225,602 people were injured in motor vehicle traffic collisions in California. When counting just the collisions themselves, there were 2,628 that resulted in fatalities and 159,115 that caused injuries. Here is a breakdown of what some of the most common primary factors were in these accidents:

Unsafe speed - 48,272 causing injury/ 410 causing death

Automobile right of way - 24,837 causing injury/ 176 causing death

Improper turning - 21,617 causing injury; 526 causing death

Traffic signals and signs - 12,610 causing injury; 129 causing death

Driving or bicycling under the influence - 12,347 causing injury/ 539 causing fatalities

There were also many other traffic violations that served as the primary factors in these accidents, including driving on the wrong side of the road, improperly passing other vehicles, failing to give the pedestrian the right of way, making unsafe lane changes, and more.

While everyone has a responsibility to follow the rules of the road and drive with caution, many people completely disregard this duty. When such violations are made, drivers (and even bicyclists and pedestrians) can end up causing other people to be seriously harmed.
