Insurance Requirements for Motorcycle Riders
With more than 800,000 registered motorcycles in California in 2019, the state shares the highest proportion of riders in the nation. Considering this, it’s unsurprising that the California Department of Motor Vehicles' insurance requirements extend to all who operate any kind of motor vehicle in the state.
How Much Coverage Do I Need?
Known as 15/30/5 coverage, California requires that motorcycle riders obtain liability coverage with a minimum of:
- $15,000 in bodily injury/death for one person.
- $30,000 in bodily injury/death for more than one person.
- $5,000 in property damage.
As with all insurance policies, riders are given the choice of obtaining additional coverages for damages.
When choosing additional coverage that's right for you, understand the differences between policies designed to protect other drivers versus the policyholder. In general, your minimum liability coverage requirements are only for protecting the other drivers or passengers involved. Along with this, additional policies may vary in coverage for bodily injury versus property damage.
If you are looking specifically for a policy to protect your motorcycle in an accident, opt for collision or comprehensive coverage. These are useful if you collide with another vehicle or if the bike is stolen/damaged by inclement weather or vandalism. On the other hand, policies like Medical Pay or Personal Injury Protection will cover medical expenses after any accident.
Depending on your location and riding habits, having additional coverage will be the easiest way to ensure that you are protected following an accident.
